Vandals Roll Cal Poly to Move to 5-1

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Third-ranked Idaho exploded for 21 points in the second quarter and while the Vandal defense held Cal Poly one touchdown in the first three quarters as No. 3 Idaho rolled to a 42-14 win over the Mustangs Saturday at Mustang Memorial Field. 

Five different Vandals scored touchdowns in the game as the offense racked up 421 yards pf offense in the game. Gevani McCoy passed for 198 yards and a touchdown while not playing much of the second half. McCoy, Woods and Romano each rushed for a touchdown while Jake Cox caught McCoy lone TD pass. 

Hayden Hatten caught five passes for 61 yards and threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Dwyer, a circus catch through contact. 

The Vandal defense collected two interceptions on the day with Kyrin Beachem and Zach Krotzer bringing down the turnovers. Syrr Barnes recorded a fumble recovery in the fourth quarter, setting up another Vandal touchdown, this time Jack Layne hit Dwyer for his second score of the game.

Romano rushed for 77 yards on 13 carries to lead the rushing attack. Anthony Woods rushed for 69 yards on 10 carries without playing much of the second half.

The Vandals are now 5-1 on the season and 3-0 in Big Sky play despite playing five of the first six games on the road and playing two FBS teams and a pair of ranked FCS squads. 

UP NEXT
The Vandals host the 5-1 Montana Grizzlies at the P1FCU Kibbie Dome next Saturday for homecoming. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 and kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available at govandals.com/tickets.

Pregame Notes
  • This is the fourth meeting of the two programs and the first in San Luis Obispo. 
  • Idaho is playing its fifth road game in the first six weeks of the season. 
  • Idaho will switch left guard Nate Azzopardi to Center and Eli Sanchez will move to left guard for today's game. 
  • The Vandals are 0-6 on coin tosses for the 2023 season.
First Quarter
  • The Vandals have scored on the opening drive of every game this season. (four TDS, two field goals)
  • The miss with 5:38 left in the first quarter was Chavez' first of the season. He is now 9-10 on the year. 
  • Idaho has outscored opponents 55-13 in the first quarter this season.
Second Quarter
  • Cox's touchdown is his second of the season and of his career. The first coming in week one against Lamar. 
  • Tight ends have scored touchdowns this season, two each by Ivy, Moore and Cox.
  • Hayden Hatten is now 2-2 passing with two touchdowns this season.
  • The touchdown catch was Dwyer's first of the season and the third of his career. 
  • Woods now has 10 touchdowns on the season.
  • At halftime, Woods needs just six yards to move to 20th all-time in Vandal history. (1,548 Robert Taylor - 1975-77)
Third Quarter
  • First career interception by Zach Krotzer
  • Third touchdown of the season for Romano. 
  • Five different Vandals have scored touchdowns today. (McCoy, Cox, Dwyer, Woods, Romano)
Fourth Quarter
  • Art Williams had his first carries as a Vandal. He was also back to receive a punt.
  • First multi touchdown game for Jordyn Dywer.
