SPOKANE, Wash. – The Idaho men's tennis team completed their 2023 fall tournament season this weekend, earning an individual championship at the Gonzaga Invite on Sunday.
Standout junior
Francisco Gay went a perfect 4-0 in the Blue Singles bracket to be crowned champion for the Vandals. The Argentina native started with an opening round straight set (6-1, 6-0) win over Seattle U's Veselin Kiselkov before posting a victory over Portland in the quarters and Gonzaga in the semifinals to clinch a spot in the title match.
Gay defeated Gonzaga's Matthew Hollingworth in a three-set finale, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 to earn his first championship at the Gonzaga Invite.
Freshman
Yu-Shun Lai also posted success in singles action, earning a runner-up finish in the Red Draw. He recorded wins over Montana State's Daniel Adrian and Tannor Binder of Portland to earn a trip to the finals. The Taiwan native came up short in the championship match, falling 6-4, 6-4 to Portland's Stefan Skobelev.
