EL PASO, Texas – The Idaho women's tennis team closed out their three-day trip at the UTEP Invitational to conclude fall competition on Sunday.
Six Vandals earned a victory in singles play, including a 3-0 record from freshman
Ida Johansson. The doubles competition saw two pairs get in the win column, including a perfect 3-0 weekend from
Valentina Rodas and
Naomi Schraeder.
Johansson earned a win on each day to lead the Vandals in singles action. She started by defeating Emma Stuart of UTEP in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Her second singles match of the weekend proved to be a bit more challenging as Johansson battled to three sets with New Mexico State's Valeriia Ivanovskaia. The first set went to NMSU, 4-6 before Johannson rallied to win the next two sets, 6-4, 7-5 to keep her perfect record alive. Another three-set thriller transpired on the final day as Johansson outlasted New Mexico's Maud Vandeputte, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
The doubles pair of Rodas and Schraeder won matches over UTEP, New Mexico State and New Mexico to cap an undefeated record. Schraeder and Rodas earned a day one win over Carlotta Mencaglia and Hanna Telzynska (UTEP) by a result of 6-4 before defeating Lisa Zhu and Ivanovskaia (NMSU) by a score of 6-3 on day two. The duo's biggest challenge came on the final day against New Mexico's M. Vandeputte and Hsuan Huang, where they earned a 7-5 win.
Selin Sepken and
Diana Khaydarshina also saw success in singles competition, bringing home two victories each.
Rachelle Starreveld, Rodas and Schraeder each recorded a win to round out Idaho's success in Texas.
A schedule for the spring dual season, including conference and non-conference matches will be announced later this winter.
