MOSCOW, Idaho -- Raleigh Grossbaum has been named the sixth head coach in Idaho men's tennis program history, Director of Athletics Terry Gawlik announced Tuesday.
"We are extremely excited to welcome Coach Grossbaum to the Vandal family," Gawlik said. "His passion for the sport and forward-thinking approach will help our student-athletes maximize their full potential both on and off the court. I'm thrilled for Raleigh and look forward to working with him to continue to elevate Idaho men's tennis."
Most recently, Grossbaum spent the past two seasons as an assistant men's tennis coach at Dartmouth College, a Division l university a part of the Ivy League in Hanover, NH. He contributed in all aspects of the program and was the primary recruiter, where he helped sign the No. 22 ranked recruiting class in the nation in 2022. The top 25 class was the fourth best in Dartmouth history. His exceptional recruiting efforts spanned to the 2023 season, where the class received votes in the national rankings.
"I am truly grateful to Terry Gawlik, and the rest of the Idaho senior staff for trusting me and believing in my ability to lead this program," Grossbaum. "I also want to recognize Coach Daniel Hangstefer for the excellent job he did with this team over the last five years. The progress and momentum he built here will continue to aid our successes in the coming years."
Before Dartmouth College, Grossbaum spent one season as a volunteer assistant coach with the University of Georgia men's tennis program. The Bulldogs held a top 10 national ranking, ended up with a record of 17-7 (8-4 SEC), and clinched a trip to NCAA Elite 8. His duties consisted of assisting with player development and coaching primarily the No. 1 singles and No. 3 doubles positions. Grossbaum was influential in developing All-American Trent Bryde.
Prior to his time at Georgia, Grossbaum was the head coach at Southern Utah (2019-20). The Thunderbirds won three of their first five matches of the dual season before the remainder of their season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Grossbaum has also made coaching stops at the USTA National Campus and Boise State University. At BSU, he was a part of program that reached a top 15 national ranking in the 2013-14 season
Before making the transition to collegiate coaching, Grossbaum competed at Ferris State in Big Rapids, Michigan. He led the Bulldogs to three Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships, an NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearance in 2016, and an NCAA Division II Final Four appearance in 2017.
Grossbaum graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in professional tennis management at Ferris State in 2017 and went on to receive a master's degree in interdisciplinary studies at Southern Utah in 2021.
A Ketchum, Idaho native, Grossbaum, 29, graduated from The Sage School in 2012.
"I am thrilled to be returning to my home state," Grossbaum stated. "I plan to capitalize on Idaho's great strengths and build the program to new heights. I see a bright future ahead, and I'm eager to get to work in pursuit of that vision."
"A final thank you to the Idaho coaches - specifically Sanne (Louwers), Jeremy (Clevenger), David (Nuhn), and (Jason) Eck," Grossbaum continued. "Your generosity and welcoming demonstrated the incredible community of Idaho athletics and cemented my decision to join the Vandal family."
