MOSCOW, Idaho – The Idaho volleyball team lost to Idaho State in three sets, 13-25, 20-25, 17-25, Saturday night in the Memorial Gym.
Taylor Brickey led the Vandal offense with 12 kills on a .385 hitting percentage.
Miya Carmichael was vital in setting up the attack, recording 27 assists and contributing six digs to the Vandal defense.
Idaho State took the first set, 25-13. The Bengals found an edge early, going up 8-1 out of the gate to get the match started. The Vandals slowly chipped away and got within two points of the Bengals (12-10) but that's the closest difference between the two teams. ISU used a 5-0 and 6-1 run to secure a 1-0 lead.
The second set saw four lead changes and five ties through the first 10 points before the Bengals gained momentum with a 3-0 run to make it 8-5. Brickey supplied three kills in the Vandals' first five points to lead offensively. ISU continued to use a series of mini spurts to increase its advantage to four but the Vandals continued to battle back and keep within striking distance. A 3-0 Idaho run midway through the set placed the Vandals down one (13-14) before the Bengals responded by scoring the next five points (13-19). A four-point Idaho swing transpired next to make it 17-19 but Idaho State closed it out with six of the next nine points to win the set, 25-20.
Idaho State claimed the final set, 25-17. A 5-0 Bengal start put the Vandals in an early hole but Idaho chipped away and generated a comeback later in the frame to make it a two-point game (10-12). Still, the Bengals remained poised and used a 5-0 run immediately to follow to make it 17-10 and ultimately extinguish any sort of comeback.
The Vandals will be back in Memorial Gym to continue their four-match homestand next week, welcoming Northern Arizona on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 6 pm.
