LA JOLLA, Calif. – Idaho men's tennis (0-4) came up short, 4-2, at UC San Diego on Sunday afternoon.
Yu-Shun Lai and the doubles unit were the two point scorers on the day.
Idaho struck first, tallying a pair of victories on courts one and three to clinch the doubles point. The Tritons started off with a win on court two before the Vandal pair of
Matteo Masala and Lai won at No. 3 by a score of 6-2.
Alex Asenov and
Sebastian Medica clinched doubles with a 7-5 result to give the Vandals a 1-0 lead.
The Tritons responded with back-to-back singles victories as
Alejandro Salvador and Medica fell on courts five and one, respectively.
Freshman
Yu-Shun Lai pulled the Vandals back tied at 2-2 with a three-set decider, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 over Daniel Traxler at the No. 3 position.
The match was closed out by Diogo Tinoco and Pelayo Rodriguez, who won on courts two and four.
Asenov led 7-6, 3-6, 5-4 on court six after the match was clinched.
The Vandals remain in the state of California to play three matches over the next week. Idaho starts off with a match against UC Santa Barbara (Feb. 21) before closing out the week against Pacific (Feb. 23) and UC Davis (Feb. 24).
