LARAMIE, Wyoming – Idaho women's tennis (4-3) capped off a two-match road trip with a 4-3 win over South Dakota and 6-1 loss to Wyoming over the weekend.
Similar to last week in Phoenix, the Vandals fell in their opening match of the week before coming out victorious to close out the competition for the week.
The Vandals started the weekend on the wrong end of a 6-1 loss to Wyoming Saturday. The Cowgirls claimed all three doubles matches and won five out of six singles outcomes.
Senior
Rachelle Starreveld took home her first singles win of the 2024 campaign, defeating Serina Abriola in three sets on court six. Starreveld dropped the opening set 5-7 before winning the second 6-1. Since the match had already been decided, the two played in a tiebreak where Starrevdeld earned a 13-11 victory.
Despite falling on five other courts, Idaho didn't go down easy as
Diana Khaydarshina,
Naomi Schraeder and
Ida Johansson all took their opponents to a third set.
Sunday's affair against South Dakota saw Idaho flip the script in doubles and win on courts two, four and five to give the Vandals their fourth win of the season and surpass their win total from a year ago (3-14) in just seven matches.
All three courts in doubles were dominant to open match play.
Saffron Dowse and Johansson got things started with a 6-1 result at No. 2 before duo
Valentina Rodas and Schraeder won 6-4 at No. 1 to build a 1-0 lead.
Selin Sepken and
Lena Beckx completed the sweep on court three with a 6-3 victory.
The Vandals went on to quickly build a 3-0 advantage after earning straight-set wins at the No. 2 and 4 positions. Johansson picked up her fourth singles victory of the season with a 6-2, 6-3 finish over Grace Chadick. Khaydarshina followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Sorcha Caves to also clinch her fourth win of the year.
South Dakota was victorious on courts one and three to make it 3-2, Idaho.
Schraeder went on to record her fourth victory and first clinch of her young career, posting a 6-4, 6-1 win over Paige Alter at No. 5.
