MOSCOW, Idaho – Idaho women's tennis opened Big Sky play with a 4-3 loss to Montana State on Friday afternoon. The Vandals move to 6-5 on the season and 0-1 in conference action.
The doubles matches were significant in determining the winner of the dual. All three matches were tight and ended in 6-4 results. However, Montana State won at No. 1 and No. 2 to take a 1-0 lead.
Lena Beckx and
Rachelle Starreveld were the lone victors for Idaho, winning on court three by way of a 6-4 score. The duo from the Netherlands moves to a team-best 8-2 record on the season.
Montana State's top three singles positions proved decisive in their first conference victory.
Selin Sepken and
Diana Khaydarshina fell in straight sets on courts two and three, respectively while Beckx went toe-to-toe against Marta Garcia-Reboredo on court one. Beckx forced a deciding third set but ultimately fell 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
The back half of Idaho's singles lineup was perfect, scoring three points to close match play.
Valentina Rodas played two tiebreaks, winning the first 7-4 and losing the second 7-3 to Montana State's Angel Bean, resulting in a deciding third set. The final frame was played to 10 and Rodas won every single point to earn her fourth singles win of the season.
Ida Johansson followed at No. 5 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Felicia Jayasaputra while
Naomi Schraeder won convincingly over Andrea Cuquerella, 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 6 position.
