SALEM, Ore. – The Idaho men's golf team finished fourth at the Oregon State Invitational this week in at the Illahe Country Club in Salem. The finish is the highest finish for the Vandals ever in the tournament for the Vandals and the first time finishing in the top five.
Josh McCartain continued his strong play, finishing t14 to lead the vandals in the tournament. He had a team, best two-under 70 in round two.
Joe Sykes finished tied for 17th at three-over for the tournament with two rounds of even-par 72 on the week.
Sam Johnson tied for 37th at seven over,
Charley Simpson was 10-over for the tournament to finish tied for 47th and Dalton Sean rounded out the scoring in a tie for 64th at 15-over.
Ben Buchanan, playing as an individual was 25-over for the tournament to finish 78th.
The course was tough with only eight players finishing under par for the weekend.
As a team, the Vandals finished 13-over 877 to finish just five strokes out of second place on the weekend. Idaho finished ahead of Gonzaga, SeattleU, Utah Valley, Wyoming and others, including topping Big Sky foe Eastern Washington by 16 strokes.
The tournament wraps the most successful fall seasons in program history.
The Vandals did not finish outside of eighth as a team all fall and picked up tournament wins at Air Force and SIUE, breaking the team scoring record in both tournaments.
Idaho is off until returning to action in mid-February at the Loyola Intercollegiate at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona.
