MOSCOW, Idaho - Idaho got back in the win column this weekend with a victory over Portland State, 45-6.Â
After PSU received the opening kickoff, the Vandal defense set in and forced the Vikings into a three-and-out with a TFL by the duo of Dylan Layne and Cruz Hepburn.Â
Idaho's offense started slow, with three incompletions and a missed 47-yard field goal by the Viking defense that was no good.
Portland State marched down the field on its second drive before stalling out in Vandal territory. The Vikings posted the game's first points with a 27-yard field goal.Â
Idaho began its second possession of the game with an 8-yard rush by quarterback Joshua Wood. This set up UI's longest play of the game, an electric catch-and-run from Elisha Cummings, to score Idaho's first touchdown of the game. This play serves as both Cummings' career-long reception and Woods' longest pass of the season.Â
Deep in Vandal territory, Jhamell Blenman thwarted the Viking offense's attempt to convert a fourth down at the start of the second frame, snagging his second pick of 2025.
The Idaho offense utilized the energy created by the defense with a loft from Wood to Noah West-Baranco for the second mighty Vandal touchdown, the longest reception of his career at 64-yards, to extend Idaho's lead to 11.Â
Coach Dennison's defense continued with its strong opening half, holding Portland State to only a field goal for the second time.Â
Wood's carried the offensive momentum to halftime, delivering two more touchdown passes before the break. A 24-yard back of the end zone strike to Marquawn McCraney with under five to go, followed by a jumping grab on the goal line by Emmerson Cortez-Menjivar put the Vandals up 28-6, after scoring on four straight possessions to close out the half.Â
Vandal pride was prominent entering the second half, as the Vandals walked down the field for a four-play possession that resulted in Rocco Koch's first career touchdown pass, a 42-yard lob to Jake Cox. Â
The defensive momentum carried over to the first drive of the second half, with Idaho forcing a three-and-out. Cummings's only rushing touchdown of the day came on the following drive, as he broke free for a 13-yard score, to stretch the Vandal advantage to 36 following an Owen Adams PAT.
The two sides traded punts ahead of a five-play drive that led Adams to convert a season-long 44-yard field goal, moving the scoreline to 45-6, where it would remain.Â
In the final minutes, QB Sawyer Teeney made his maiden appearance as a Vandal, going 2-4 through the air and running for 14-yards.Â
