Joshua Wood rushed for a career high 117 yards and a touchdown in the Vandals' close game against the Hornets.
Idaho and Idaho State renew their rivalry this weekend in a series that originally started in 1916. The Vandals hold a 33-13 advantage in the rivalry, have won the last four games, nine of the last 11, and 16 of the last 19 in the series. Idaho has also won the last 11 matchups in Moscow.
This week's game is a strength-on-strength contest, as the Bengals bring in their high-powered offense against the Vandals' stout defense. The Vandals are limiting opponents to 380 yards and 25 points per game – both rank third in the Big Sky - while Idaho State's offense averages 32 points and 464 yards per outing.
Idaho's strong defense is led by Priest River, Idaho native
Matyus McLain, who ranks third in the conference in tackles for loss with 12.0 and leads the team with 4.5 sacks.
RIVALRY HISTORY
This is the 47
th meeting in series history which dates back to 1916. The Vandals and the Bengals have played for four trophies over the duration of the rivalry.
The Placer Pan Trophy was the first trophy and was awarded to the first team to win five games in the series starting in 1962. Idaho won five consecutive matchups, and will forever have the trophy. "VANDALS POSSESS TROPHY FOREVER" is etched at the bottom of the Placer Pan which currently resides in the P1FCU Kibbie Dome.
The two teams, along with Boise State, competed for the Gem State Trophy from 1971-2010. All three teams were in the Big Sky Conference until 1995.
From 2018-2023, the Vandals and Bengals squared off for the Battle of the Domes Trophy.
As of last season, UI and ISU play for one of the most famous trophies in college football – The Potato State Trophy. At its creation, the trophy, made of Douglas Fir and created by Idaho's Assistant Athletic Director for Brand Engagement and Digital Strategy,
Jerek Wolcott, weighed 19.4 pounds. As has recently been reported, the trophy has famously lost weight and is down to a trim 18.6 pounds.
