Chiarelli Scores to Lead Idaho to 1-0 Win Over UTEP

MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) — Calli Chiarelli scored in the 10th minute, and Idaho's defense did the rest, as the Vandals earned a 1-0 victory over UTEP on Thursday night at the P1FCU Kibbie Dome.

Chiarelli put the Vandals (3-2-2) in front early when she scored a rebound goal. Bella Gissendanner sent a free kick into the box, finding Georgia Whitehead whose header hit the cross bar. The ball bounced right to Chiarelli who finished with the header. The goal was Chiarelli's second of the season and provided all the scoring Idaho would need.

Idaho controlled the first half, outshooting UTEP 9-2 and producing a steady wave of pressure. Whitehead was particularly active, taking four shots in the opening 45 minutes, including one on target in the 19th minute that was turned away.

The Miners (2-4-1) responded with more chances after halftime, but the Vandals' defense held firm. Goalkeeper Paula Flores came up with three second half saves, including a one-on-one save late in the game. She secured her Big Sky leading fourth shutout of the season.

The Vandals finished with a 12-6 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

Idaho is off for a week before hitting the road to play on the road at Grand Canyon (Sept. 11) and CSU Bakersfield (Sept.14) before returning home to host Boise State on Sept. 18.
