MOSCOW, Idaho - Thomas Ford Jr. and Idaho Football have added some big-time depth to the secondary since the end of spring practice, with the latest piece falling into place as the Vandals announced the signing of UAB and Ellsworth Community College transfer Deion Gunn on Thursday.
DEION GUNN - DEFENSIVE BACK - ELLSWORTH COMMUNITY COLLEGE
A 5'11" DB originally from Center Point, AL, Deion Gunn adds immediate versatility to Idaho's defensive backfield. Listed as both a cornerback and safety by multiple outlets, he starred primarily on the boundary at Ellsworth Community College while also getting reps at safety and at the nickel spot in 2025. Physicality was on display in Gunn's five games spent with the Panthers, as he racked up 17 total tackles, an interception, and eight pass breakups. He spent his true freshman campaign close to home, appearing in one game at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), just a fifteen minute drive from his hometown of Center Point.
Gunn played his prep career at Clay-Chalkville HS in Pinson, AL, leading the Cougars to a perfect 14-0 record via a stingy defense that allowed nearly 400 fewer points than the offense scored. This included seven contests where Clay-Chalkville surrendered no more than seven points, with three of those being shutouts. The stellar season culminated in the eventual Class 6A championship win in 2023 over a Saraland HS squad that included future Alabama standout Ryan Williams.
The Yellowhammer State native joins Sha'Heem Taylor and Daemon Fagan as the third addition to the secondary since the end of spring practice, and will be able to contend for multiple roles in defensive coordinator Lee Stalker's unit in 2026.
