MOSCOW, Idaho - The offense made headway and the defense showed signs, if not consistency, as the University of Idaho football team wrapped up its third week of spring drills with Saturday morning's scrimmage.
"There really are a lot of good things today," coach Tom Cable said after watching the offense recover from its first scrimmage struggles to score seven times Saturday morning. "We threw the ball better today in terms of decision making. The things I like today was we had more rhythm offensively and better focus, better leadership out of our older kids. A lot more poise as a group."
There were good things out of the younger group, too, with sophomore quarterback Michael Harrington completing 15-of-21 passes for 328 yards and three touchdowns. Senior Brian Lindgren was 13-of-25 for 183 yards and one score.
To complement their passing, were 90 rushing rushing yards from Zach Gerstner, 72 from Malfred Shaw and 51 from redshirt freshman Mike Lowry.
Yet, when there is that much offensive production (724 yards in 110 plays), the defense is left with questions to answer.
"You have to give it to the offense this week," said senior defensive tackle Brian Howard. "But as a defense, we regrouped a few times. We made some stops; held them to field goals. We didn't do what we wanted to do but we had some good stops in there to keep us positive and motivated."
The defense's numbers have been depleted by injury with two potential starting linebackers out and several backups missing the team's second scrimmage.
Nevertheless, Cable said, progress must be, and was, made.
"I'm very pleased with the week," Cable said. "We're a better football team than we were last week."
