Vandals fare well at Long Beach Invitational

WALNUT, Calif., LONG BEACH, Calif. - The University of Idaho men's and women's track and field teams spilt their time this weekend between the Long Beach Invitational on April 15 and the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays at Mt. San Antonino College in Walnut, Calif. April 14-16.

One of the highlights for the weekend was Tawanda Chiwira who won the men's 400 meters at Mt. SAC in an NCAA Provisional qualifying time of 45.46. His time, a season best, is just shy of the NCAA Automatic qualifying time 45.40.

UI's contingent fared quite well at Long Beach, with the men's 4x100 relay team (Nikela Ndebele, Errol Aguilera, Chiwira and Stewart James) capturing a first-place finish in a time of 40.51. Ndebele also ran a personal best 10.43 to place first in the 100 meter dash.

Cassie Greenlee won the women's 400 meter hurdles in a personal best time of 1:00.77 at Long Beach. On April 16, Greenlee competed at the Mt. Sac Relays and set another new personal best in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing 13th in a time of 1:00.31. Katie Kress triple-jumped 39-3, a personal best, to place second at Long Beach.

Additional notable performances at Mt. SAC include Jamie Stone's 20th place finish in the 3,000 meters. Stone's time of 10:07.13 is a season best and moves her into 5th on the Big West Conference list. In addition, Zsanett Teveli placed 29th in the 5,000 meter run with a season best time of 17:08.38. Her time moves her into 3rd in the Big West Conference. Teveli also ran a season best 4:38.05 in the 1,500 meter run.

Other top women finishers at Mt. SAC include Shana Ball who placed 6th in the shot put with a throw of 47-7. Heather Dennis placed 20th in the 200 meters in a season-best time of 24.89.

On the men's side at Mt. SAC, Kevin Davis threw a season best 208-5 in the javelin while Jan Eitel also had a season best in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a finish of 9:08.74.
