Vandals open fall soccer camp

During the short three-year history of the University of Idaho soccer program, improvement has always been the main goal. With that still the focus, another one may be looming on the horizon - a Big West Conference title.

"For a fourth year program to be in this situation is wonderful," Idaho coach Larry Foster said after watching the Vandals go through their first two-a-day drills Friday. "With the kids that we brought in, along with another year of experience (for our returning players), we have a much stronger squad than we had last year."

After finishing 11-6-2 and placing third in the Big West Conference, the Vandals may be primed for a run at a league title. As for Foster's goals for the 2001 season, they are simple.

"Every thing is forward, we don't take any steps backward," Foster said.

Although the Vandals lost three seniors from last year's lineup, the six freshmen and a strong returning squad keep them on track to continued success and growth.

"Returning players have came in fired up and in shape," said Foster, who added the freshmen have matched the intensity of the upper classmen and are a good blend in the team's overall chemistry.

The Vandals open their season at the Diadora Classic at Boise Aug. 31. They face Boise State, followed by Weber State Sept. 1. Idaho's home opener is against Pac 10 opponent Oregon on Sept. 5 at 3 p.m. at Guy Wicks Field.
