Ogden, UTAH - The University of Idaho women's soccer team lost its second-consecutive match Thursday, falling 2-1 to Weber State in non-conference action. This marks the first time this season the Vandals have lost two straight.
Idaho (2-4-0) began the game playing sloppy and gave up a goal at the 3:50 mark. The first half woes which have plagued the team all season continued as Weber State (2-3-1) notched another goal in the 23rd minute to take a 2-0 lead. The Vandals managed just two shots in the first half, compared to nine for the Wildcats and Weber State held the 2-0 advantage going into halftime.
The second half began in Idaho's favor as the Vandals scored in the 49th minute, just four minutes in. Sonja Baumgartner was taken down in the penalty box and Jenny Springer converted the penalty kick for her second goal of the season. That would prove to be the end of the scoring, however, as the game ended 2-1.
Only three Idaho players mustered a shot in the game with Springer leading the way with five. As a team, the Vandals were outshot 17-8 in the game.
"I felt like this was a game of two halves," head coach Pete Showler said. "We played very sloppy in the first half and had no passion or pride. We talked at halftime and made some adjustments and the team came out and dominated the field in second half and had passion and pride oozing out of them. This team needs to know how to win and how to compete for 90 minutes and it shouldn't take me getting after them to want to play the way they are capable of playing. They responded well after halftime in this game, but with the way we played in the first half we left ourselves with too big of an uphill climb."
Idaho will look to get back on track Sunday as the Vandals host Montana at Guy Wicks Field in Moscow. The match begins at 1 p.m.
