Hawai`i no paradise for Vandals

Box Score

HONOLULU, Hawai`i - The beginning of the game and the end epitomize the University of Idaho's struggles Saturday at Aloha Stadium.

In a game Idaho coach Dennis Erickson described as never having seen the likes of, the Vandals lost 68-10 to Hawai`i's Warriors in a Western Athletic Conference game that left Idaho at 4-5 overall and 3-2 in league, UH at 6-2 overall and 4-1 in league.

"They executed," Erickson said. "We didn't."

It took the Warriors just 18 seconds to score when Ross Dickerson took the opening kickoff 100 yards. With Dan Kelly's PAT kick, the score was 7-0 with 14:42 left in the first.

The second to the last Vandal possession was an interception that Ryan Keomaka returned 29 yards to score.

"Everything they did was right," Erickson said. "I didn't have an answer. I've never been in a football game like this in my life.

After forcing the Vandals to punt on their first possession, Hawai`i quarterback Colt Brennan steadily chipped away at the Idaho defense to work the Warriors in for the second TD, a 10-yard pass to Jason Rivers with 6:26 to go in the first. Kelly's kick made it 14-0.

On its next possession, Idaho had an answer. Wichman went to the air using Luke Smith-Anderson, Brian Flowers and Wendell Octave to cover the 72 yards needed for their first TD. After Raymond Fry returned the kickoff from the endzone to the UH 26, Wichman went to Smith-Anderson for a 14-yard gain. Flowers covered the next three with a run over the left side before Octave and Wichman hooked up for 22 yards. Wichman scrambled for a yard on the next play then found Smith-Anderson for a 10-yard pickup. After an incompletion, Flowers took the screen pass 21 yards to the UH 4. He gained one more yard on the ground before Wichman found Octave in the endzone. Tino Amancio remained perfect on his PATs with the successful kick to bring the Vandals to within 14-7 with 2:23 left in the first.

The Warriors also struck first in the second. This time the drive, which started in the first, culminated with a two-yard pass from Brennan to Davone Bess. With 52 seconds gone in the second quarter, UH led 21-7.

Idaho squeezed something out of its next drive, although it was left wanting more than Amancio's 26-yard field goal after seven shots at the endzone from the 15 or closer. A productive drive initially stalled at the Hawai`i 15 and Amancio's 32-yard attempted missed left. But, Hawai`i's Keala Watson was called for a personal foul and the Vandals had the ball at the UH 7. A loss of two yards by Flowers then back-to-back completions set up another field goal attempt, this one good for a 21-10 UH lead with 0:45 left in the first half.

The Warriors displayed another way to cover ground on their next possession. Of course, Brennan's precision passing still was in effect but his own 26-yard scramble provided a big chunk of the yardage. Initially, shifty back Nate Ilaoa was ruled to have scored on a 10-yard burst. However, the play was reviewed and it was ruled Ilaoa's knee was down at the one. He went in on the next play. With the successful PAT, UH took a 28-10 lead with 5:46 left in the half.

After forcing the Vandals to punt on Idaho's next possession, the Warriors needed just seven plays to up their lead to 35-10 with 21 seconds left in the first half. Brennan flipped the ball to Ilaoa at the 18 and he covered the distance for the score.

The Warriors scored on their first two possessions of the second half to go up 48-10, a lead that held up until the start of the fourth quarter.
