A visit with junior sprinter Sam Michener
Talk about the coming season:
It's going to be a big year. There's more pressure this year to perform when it counts. This year, we're looking better, so I think we've got a good shot to win. My first two years, there have been a lot of injuries with my hamstrings. If it wasn't my right one, it was my left one. I've made some changes mechanically and I'm feeling now and the hamstrings are strong, so I'm looking for a pretty good year.
How has training gone so far this year?
I started training for this next year in February, because I was hurt in January. I rehabbed, then had to take a medical redshirt during the outdoor season, so ever since February of this year, I've been training for January. Hopefully, it's all going to pay off when it comes around.
What is your major and why?
I'm a sports science major. I think that being an athlete, you're just more interested in how the body works. I'm interested in how to improve myself. I love science and I love sports, so I guess sports science is great for me.
What do you like about Moscow?
It's a quiet place. I'm from Portland, and there are a lot of gangs and things like that, but you don't have to worry about that here. It's a nice, quiet town.
What do you like about the University of Idaho?
I like a lot of things. The people are really nice around here. There are small class sizes, so you can actually get to know your peers. You actually see people you know on campus. It's a nice little community.
What do you miss about home?
The little community here is nice, but I also miss the big city. There's a lot to do in the big city. There's rivers right there and the ocean is just two hours away. That's probably what I miss the most, just the big city.
What is your favorite class?
Right now, it's probably exercise physiology. It's really applicable to me, because I really like to know what the body can do physically. It's just really cool.
Who is your favorite professor?
I'm probably going to have to say Dr. Dolny of my exercise physiology class. He's a lot of fun.
What is your favorite movie?
All-time, it's Braveheart. That movie is just awesome. Lately, I'd say Transformers. That movie just rocks.
What is your favorite meal?
I like a big, fat steak, right off the grill. I have that like three times a week.
What is your favorite musical style and artist?
I love rap. That's what I listen to the most. Right now, I'm probably into 50 Cent's new album the most.
What do you want to do when you graduate from Idaho?
Hopefully, I'll keep running track. I want to go to Europe and run the tour there. I have some friends who live there now. I just want to do track as long as I can, and when I'm done with that, I'll fall back on the degree I get here.
