MOSCOW, Idaho ? Robb Akey saw a lot he liked ? offensively and defensively ? Saturday during the University of Idaho Vandals' third scrimmage of the fall.
“I like the progress very much that we've made,” said Akey after the 90-minute session before a throng of Vandal faithful. “There are some things we can clean up but we're making strides.”
He saw continued solid production out of redshirt freshman Nathan Enderle and steady running from senior Brian Flowers and Jayson Bird. Flowers finished with 36 yards on five carries and Bird had 30 on seven.
Again, the receivers were many with 10 players catching passes. True freshman Eric Greenwood led the group with three catches for 26 yards.
Defensively, there were inspired efforts all around with senior Stanley Franks grabbing a fumble midair and junior college transfer Breyon Williams nabbing an interception. Senior Brandon Ogletree had a sack as did redshirt freshman Jonathan Faraimo and true freshman Isaac Butts. Senior Jo`Artis Ratti and redshirt freshman Adam Shamion each had one sack.
“Our defense did a good job of flying around,” Akey said. “I like the progress we've made. We certainly still need more but I do like where we are.”
Another solid outing was turned in by junior Tino Amancio, who booted field goals of 54 and 19 yards ? although a 52-yard attempt was barely short.
Where Akey would like to see better focus is penalties as six flags were thrown during the scrimmage.
“There were a lot more yellow flags out there,” he said. “But, a lot of those things can be taken care of before the snap.”
Classes begin Monday at Idaho with practice resuming Tuesday at 3:45 p.m.
