MOSCOW, Idaho ? After a successful regular season on the courts, the University of Idaho women's tennis team is heading to the 2008 WAC Championships this week in Las Cruces, N.M. Idaho, the six seed, will face three-seeded Nevada on Thursday, April 24 with the first serve at noon.
After losing all but one member of the 15-win 2007 squad, the Vandals rebuilt and compiled a 16-9 record overall and went 2-3 in the WAC. This spring, they put together a seven-match winning streak and have won 13 out of their last 15 matches.
Leading the new look Vandals are Basia Maciocha, Alexandra Ulesanu and Silvia Irimescu. Sophomore transfer Maciocha has been stellar in singles for Idaho with a 16-8 record playing at four different lineup positions. She strung together a seven-match winning streak and ended the season on a hot note, going 8-2 in the last 10 matches. In doubles, Maciocha and teammate Natalie Kirch have been nearly unbeatable with 13 wins and only two losses.
Ulesanu, also a sophomore transfer, has been impressive in her first season at Idaho. She tallied a 14-10 singles record and went 7-3 playing at the fourth position. Competing at No. 2 and 3 doubles, Ulesanu and Yvette Ly teamed together to go 10-4 during the spring.
Playing in the No. 1 singles spot, Irimescu has been solid for the Vandals. The freshman went 14-8 at one singles and finished the regular season with eight wins in the last 10 matches.
Seeded sixth in the WAC Championships, the Vandals (16-9, 2-3) will open up against the No. 3 Nevada Wolfpack (8-10, 2-2) on Thursday, April 24 at noon. The winner will move on to face the winner of No. 2 Boise State and No. 7 Utah State on Friday.
