Vandals Unable To Ground Ducks

EUGENE, Ore. ? University of Idaho Men's Tennis fought hard but were unable to overcome the University of Oregon on Friday.

The Vandals fell 6-1 to the Ducks, losing two singles matches in the tiebreaker and having two players fight through injuries to complete their matches.

“It was a disappointing match to lose especially considering we had a chance to pick up wins in three different matches,” University of Idaho Tennis Director Jeff Beaman said. “It was neck and neck and the game could have easily gone either way.”

The lone Vandal point came from senior Rob Chalkley's victory over Duncan McDonald-Korth in No. 5 singles.

Idaho's also won in No. 1 doubles with Artem Kuznetsov and Alexandru Joitoiu outlasting Oregon pair Marcos Verdasco/Alexander Cornelissen 8-7.

Junior Kuznetsov also put in a strong shift at No. 1 singles taking Oregon's Verdasco to a third-set tiebreaker before falling 6-2, 6-7, 10-6.

“Artem did a great job today in both doubles and singles,” Beaman said. “He is still recovering from his shoulder problem but played well despite the pain he had.”

Stanislav Glukhov also took his opponent to a third-set tiebreaker but he too was unable to pick up the win losing 5-7, 6-4, 10-3.

New Vandal duo Joitoiu and Alan Shin both played well in singles but were unable to add to their win total. Shin sprained his ankle in the first set of his match but was able to continue.

“Alex had leads in both sets but failed to capitalize and he will be able to use this as a learning experience.” Beaman said. “Alan was playing well before the injury but it definitely affected his performance in the second set.”

Idaho's next match is Saturday in Eugene with a neutral site outing against Samford.
