PORTLAND, Ore. ? The University of Idaho Men's Tennis overcame a slate of injuries to take down Samford and UC Davis during the weekend.
On Saturday Idaho defeated Samford, a NCAA tournament team last season, 5-2 in Eugene and notched a 4-3 victory over highly regarded UC Davis in Portland on Sunday.
“The team put in a great effort over all three days,” University of Idaho Director of Tennis Jeff Beaman said. “We had a lot of players banged up during the weekend which made things harder than we would have liked.”
Juniors Artem Kuznetsov and Stanislav Glukhov gave the Vandals singles victories from the No. 1 and 2 spots respectively against Samford. Rob Chalkley also collected a tough three-set win from the No. 4 spot in singles play.
In doubles, Idaho took two of three matches to earn a vital point to start the game.
“It was a well fought match and both teams played hard,” Beaman said. “The game was a lot close than the final score appears.”
The Vandals had a short trip north on Interstate 5 to meet UC Davis on Sunday.
Idaho started strong winning all three doubles matches. Kuznetsov and Alex Joitiou earned their third doubles victory from the No. 1 spot during the Oregon road trip.
In singles, Glukhov, Chalkley and Joitiou all picked up wins to seal the match for the Vandals against a UC Davis team that was nationally ranked throughout the season last year.
Alan Shin retired from his match with an ankle injury. Huynh played and won the first set carrying the injury but retired after Idaho had sealed victory in the game.
“This weekend was tough for the team but we were able to come through it stronger,” Beaman said. “I am really excited about the possibilities of this team when we get healthy.”
Idaho has the upcoming week off before a Feb. 13 showdown against Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash.
