SPOKANE, Wash. ? The University of Idaho men's tennis team showed little rust defeating Gonzaga 5-2 on Friday.
The Vandals were successful in their first match in 13 days and improved their record to 5-1 on the season.
“We played well today and this is a good win for the team,” University of Idaho Director of Tennis Jeff Beaman said. “Gonzaga is a good team and one that has given us problems in the past.”
In singles, Alex Joitoiu, Rob Chalkley and Alan Shin picked up straight set victories. Junior Stanislav Glukhov recorded a hard fought three set win at No. 2 singles to help ensure Idaho left Spokane with a win.
“Stas won a really difficult match in which he showed some good composure,” Beaman said. “The match could have gone either way and he did well to win it.”
Idaho swept doubles with the pairings of Artern Kuznetsov/Alex Joitoiu, Robert Chalkley/Timothy Huynh and Alan Shin/Hugh McDonald overcoming their Gonzaga counterparts.
“Our doubles play started the match off right,” Beaman said. “It is important to start the match off strong and we were able to do that against Gonzaga.”
The Vandals are open conference play with a trip to Las Cruces, N.M. to battle New Mexico State Feb. 20.
