Men's Tennis Two-Steps In Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. ? The University of Idaho men's tennis team split a pair of matches in Portland on Saturday.

Idaho ended the day with a 5-2 victory over Portland State but could not stop the University of Portland from claiming 4-2 win in the morning match.

The Vandals showed the effects of their morning match falling in doubles 2-1. Idaho bounced back in singles claiming victories in spots two through six to improve its record to 12-7.

Stanislav Glukhov, Alan Shin, Hugh McDonald and Timothy Huynh all won in straight sets. Alex Joitoiu notched a hard fought three-set victory over Kyle Erickson 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

“It was good to get a win against PSU after the tough match that morning against UP and having a few players hurt going into the match,” University of Idaho Director of Tennis Jeff Beaman said. “I was really disappointed in how the doubles went but we increased the level for the singles and came away with the win.”

In the morning, Idaho struggled against a strong Pilots squad. Artem Kuznetsov registered a victory at the No. 1 spot with 3-6, 6-4, 6-1comeback win over Joel Kincaid. Kuznetsov teamed with Glukhov to win their doubles match against Kincaid and Nikoloz Kurdadze 8-6. Joitoiu grabbed Idaho's other point with a 7-5, 6-1 over Kurdadze at the No. 3 position.

“Portland is a really strong team and they play great at home, we had our chances but did not capitalize,” Beaman said. “Artem had a good day winning his doubles match and beating their #1 singles player.”

Idaho is back in action on Wednesday with a return match against Gonzaga. The Vandals dispatched of the Bulldogs 5-2 in February.
