Vandals Earn First Conference Victory

FRESNO, Calif. ? The University of Idaho men's tennis team earned their first WAC victory of the season with a win over Utah State on Friday.

 

Idaho swept the Aggies 7-0 to improve its record to 13-7 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

 

“This was an important win for us in terms of conference rankings and seeding for the conference tournament,” University of Idaho Director of Tennis Jeff Beaman said. “Utah State is a good team and it took a lot to get the win.”

 

The Vandals took all three doubles matches in convincing fashion with Alex Joitoiu /Hugh McDonald defeated Jacob Asplund /Bryan Marchant at the No. 1 position 8-1 and Artem Kuznetsov/Stanislav Glukhov and Rob Chalkley/Timothy Huyhn also picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

 

“We really set the tone for the entire day during doubles play,” Beaman said. “We came out strong and did not let up in doubles.”

 

In singles, Kuznetsov, Joitoiu, Chalkley, Alan Shin and Hugh McDonald all won in straight sets. Stanislav Glukhov overcame Marchant 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 at the No. 2 position to clinch the sweep for Idaho.

 

“It was important to start this weekend on the right foot with a win,” Beaman said. “We have three important conference games against three tough teams during the next two days.”

 

Idaho is in action tomorrow with conference showdowns against Hawaii and Fresno State.
