PULLMAN, Wash. - The University of Idaho women's tennis team wrapped up its first tournament of the season with impressive performances at the Cougar Classic Saturday.

Maria Perevoshchikova won her quarterfinal match in Crimson Singles by a 6-1, 6-2 score and was tough competition for nationally-ranked Elisabeth Fournier of Washington State as the match ended 6-3, 7-6. In the consolation round, Silvia Irimescu and Alexandra Ulesanu each earned victories while Barbara Maciocha fell in a marathon match 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.

In Gray Singles, Justine Textor tallied two victories in the consolation round while Natalie Kirch and Jana Siwa both were knocked from the quarterfinals.

The Vandals fared well in the consolation round of Crimson Doubles as both teams of Perevoshchikova/Ulesanu and Maciocha/Irimescu picked up two victories.

The Siwa/Kirch team represented Idaho in Gray Doubles but fell 8-5.

"Overall, I am happy with our performance in this tournament," Idaho women's tennis coach Tyler Neill said. "It is good to see all of our players pick up quality wins to start the season. Hopefully we can build upon this and carry our strong play into next weekend.

"I was very impressed with Maria today. She had a great win in the quarterfinals before falling in the semis to a tough, nationally-ranked player.  Justine also played very well.  She had two tough matches and found a way to win both of them," Neill said.

Idaho continues the fall tournament season next weekend at the Eastern Washington/Gonzaga Fall Tournament at Cheney, Wash.
