Box Score HONOLULU, Hawai'i - There wasn't one thing that could account for the University of Idaho's Western Athletic Conference loss at Hawai'i Saturday. No, it was a ledger filled with miscues, penalties, dropped balls, turnovers. Pretty much the gamut as the Vandals yielded more points than they have all season in the 45-10 loss at Aloha Stadium.
The Vandals drop to 4-4 and 1-2 in the WAC, while Hawai'i improves to 7-2 overall and is 5-0 in the WAC.
"Turnovers put us in a hole," said senior running back Deonte' Jackson, who had 101 all-purpose yards with 56 rushing and 45 receiving. "That's definitely a momentum killer."
"Turnovers were costly to us," coach Robb Akey said. "They did have an impact.
"(Hawai'i) got on a roll of momentum. We didn't make plays to stop it."
Idaho marched the length of the field and scored on its first drive when Trey Farquhar booted a 35-yard field goal after the Vandals stalled at the Hawai'i 18. The drive, with a mix of passes and runs, consumed 4:21 and wound up with Idaho leading 3-0 with 10:39 left in the first.
The Vandal defense held on Hawai'i's first possession and gave up only a field goal - a 34-yard kick by Scott Enos, on the next. The Warriors second TD of the opening period was set up by an Enderle interception and gave Hawai'i the ball at the Vandal 48. Royce Pollard pulled in the 10-yard pass from Bryant Moniz to push the Warriors to a 10-3 lead with three seconds remaining in the first.
The second quarter unfolded into a period of turnovers and penalties as the Warriors made the most of Idaho miscues to score back-to-back-to-back TDs - Kealoha Pilares' four-yard run,
Richard Torres' 57-yard fumble recovery and Alex Green's one-yard run - to forge a 31-3 lead at the half.
The stats didn't tell a story as lopsided as the score. Idaho lost the ball on an interception and Torres' fumble recovery during those 15 minutes as well as being hit with four penalties for 45 yards - and Farquhar's 26-yard field goal attempt was blocked.
Hawai'i added another touchdown to its lead in the third with a 16-yard pass from Moniz to Dustin Blount after Shiloh Keo fumble a punt return to give the Warriors the ball at the Idaho 25. For the Vandals, it was a continuation of their woes. In addition to the additional turnover, they mustered just 35 yards total offense as they dropped behind 38-3.
Early in the fourth, the Warriors tacked another score to run the tally to 45-3. Idaho completed the scoring with backup quarterback Brian Reader found redshirt freshman tight end Taylor Elmo with an 18-yard scoring pass with 2:18 to play.
