It was a clean sweep for the University of Idaho men's tennis team last weekend. The Vandals notched wins over UC Santa Cruz, LCSC and Gonzaga to improve to 3-2 on the season.
Idaho was in Walla Walla, Wash. on Saturday for a double header and came away with a 5-2 win over UC Santa Cruz and a 6-0 thumping of LCSC.
"The two wins Saturday are a nice rebound from last weekend," Idaho Director of Tennis Jeff Beaman said. "UCSC is the defending D.III National Champions and LCSC is a nationally ranked NAIA team."
Those matches were a warm up for Saturday's showdown with Gonzaga in Spokane.
"Going into Sunday's match against Gonzaga we were a little banged up, and historically we have always had very tough matches playing Gonzaga but I was looking for good things from our guys," Beaman said. "This is a chance for them to show that they are gonig to live up to their potential, or it is a chance for them to come out flat and make excuses for themselves."
There was no such problem for the Vandals as the team outclassed the Bulldogs 6-1.
"The Gonzaga win caps a good weekend for the men's team," Beaman said. "The past few years we have struggled playing Gonzaga at their place early in the year but we came out strong and put in a dominant performance after beating two good teams yesterday."
Lachlan Reed put in an impressive display for Idaho going undefeated in both singles and doubles play.
Idaho will rest up this week before heading out the Oregon for matches against Oregon, Portland State and Seattle in Eugene.
"Looking towards next weekend we need to focus on getting everybody as healthy as possible and our doubles play," Beaman said.
