BOISE, Idaho.-- The Idaho men's tennis team left something to be gained with a 6-1 defeat on Saturday at the Appleton Tennis Center at the hands of Boise State.

Action began in doubles with the Broncos taking the first point. The Vandal pairing of Cristobal Ramos Salazar and Jackson Varney were defeated on the No. 1 court 6-1, while on the No. 2 court the Idaho pairing of Odon Barta and Felipe Fonseca got edged, 7-5. With the point in hand, the No. 3 court was left unfinished at 6-6.

Singles play revealed the same result for the Vandals as they took only one match, despite two matches being pushed to three sets. Barta dropped a nail-biter on the No. 1 court, 6-1, 7-6 (3) to BSU's Garrett Patton. Varney and Mark Kovacs each pushed their matches to three sets in hard-fought battles, but fell just short in each. Fonseca was the Vandal bright spot as the freshman continued his solid play with a straight-set victory on the No. 2 court, 6-2, 6-4. The Broncos wrapped up singles play with straight set victories on the No. 3 and 6 courts.

“The team generally competed better today against a good Boise State squad that beat a nationally ranked Utah State program earlier this morning,” head coach Jeff Beaman noted. “Our goal is winning the conference tournament and we just need to keep working hard.”

With the loss, Idaho is now 13-9 on the season with its final regular season match set for Sunday at 5:30 p.m. PT against Utah State in Boise.

Idaho finished second in Big Sky regular season play, giving them a first-round bye in the upcoming Big Sky Conference tournament, April, 24.
