Akanno played on offense and defense, and played basketball. As a senior, he had 126 total tackles (79 solo and 47 assists) in 10 games. He also had eight sacks totaling 56 yards in losses and 14 tackles for loss. He also had three interceptions, three passes defensed and one fumble recovery. He was a first-team all-Bay League choice and was honored eight times as the Player of the Game. As a junior, he had 31 total tackles (11 solo and 20 assists) as well as three sacks for -16 yards, one tackle for loss, two passes defensed and one blocked punt. During his sophomore season, he had 23 total tackles (14 solo and nine assists) to go with six tackles for loss, two passes defensed and one fumble recovery. He was an all-conference choice as a junior and senior. As a basketball player his senior year, he averaged 8.9 points and 13.1 rebounds per game en route to earning five Player of the Game honors.
