Marianna Petrei opened the 2017 fall tennis season representing Idaho and the big Sky Conference at the ITA/Oracle Masters. Petrei, the reigning back-to-back Big Sky MVP, played both singles and mixed doubles in the early season tournament.
The round of 32 got underway on the Thursday with Petrei seeded 15th overall. She matched up with the No. 17 seed Celia Ruiz of Eastern Carolina. Ruiz took the match 6-3, 6-2. Petrei played out of the consolation bracket on Friday. She took on Boston University's Remi Ramos, advancing with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 win. Her singles play wrapped up in the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday. Petrei fell to South Alabama's Alexandria Stiteler, 0-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Petrie played mixed doubles with the Big Sky's men's representative, Tim Handel of Northern Arizona. The Big Sky drew the Big 10 in the first round. Petrei and Handel fell to Ohio State's Anna Sanford and Minnesota's Matic Spec. The Big Sky duo put up a fight but fell short, 6-4.
The Idaho women's team gets the season underway on Friday, Sept. 29. The team will make the trip up to Gonzaga to participate in the Bulldog Invitational.
