BOULDER CITY, Nev.- Enrique Marin tied a Big Sky record Sunday, shooting a 7-under 65 in the final round of the 2018 Big Sky Conference Championships at Boulder Creek Golf Club. Marin's 65 gave him a third-place individual finish and paced Idaho men's golf to a 3-under 285 team score, vaulting them up the leaderboard to take third place.
"What a day for Vandal golf," said head coach
David Nuhn. "This was a huge step forward for our program. It was a complete team effort all week. They stayed locked in on what their goals were and picked each other up when they needed it."
The 285 gave Idaho a 14-over 878 for the tournament and moved the Vandals from fifth to third on the final day, racing past fourth-place Weber State (20-over; 884) and fifth-place Sacramento State (23-over; 887). The Vandals improved on last year's seventh-place performance at the same course by 45 strokes.
Last year Marin also saved his best round for last, carding a 67 to finish in eighth. This year the junior's final-round 65 put him in third place, two shots out of a playoff for the title. It matches the lowest score recorded at a Big Sky Conference Championship in league history, last accomplished by former teammate
Ryan Porch in 2016. Marin finished the tournament at 6-under (210; 71-74-65).
"Today was a big day for Enrique," Nuhn said. "The most impressive thing is that he was really playing at this level all week, he just finally made a bunch of putts today. I'm super happy to see him finish the season on such a high note. For him to finish third is awesome and well deserved."
Freshman
Cole Chrisman closed out his strong week with a 2-over 74 Sunday. Chrisman shot 5-over (221; 76-71-74) for the tournament to finish in a tie for 12th.
Sophomore
Brock Anderson posted a countable score all three days, improving each round. Anderson closed the week with a 1-over 73 to match his best score to par of the season. He finished the tournament in a tie for 21st at 8-over 224 (76-75-73).
Freshman
Adam Veenstra also carded a 1-over 73 Sunday, to claim a top-25 finish with his 13-over 229 (76-80-73).
"I'm excited for the future of our program," said Nuhn. "All of these guys are coming back and it's only up from here for the Vandals."
