SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Austin Beyer wrapped up competition in the javelin throw at the 2018 NCAA West Preliminary, finishing third in his flight at 62.60 meters (205-4). He took 25th overall, after entering the competition ranked 35th.
"It went well, I was above 60 meters on all my throws," Beyer recalled. "It was definitely my best series that I've had. I wish I had three more throws here, it would've been nice. But this was all I could've asked for, honestly."
He came out strong, leading the pack after the first round with a toss of 60.82 meters (199-6). He broke 60 meters again on his second throw, then exploded for his final mark of 62.60 meters (205-4) on his third and final throw.
"I thought he did pretty well. As far as the field he was in, I think he was pretty much in line with the rest of the guys," said assistant coach for the throws,
Jason Fearheiley. "I felt like he competed to the best of his ability, and it looked like he had a lot of fun. Knowing him and working with him, I knew which ways to talk to him to make sure he was still having fun. It looks like he did that, and that's all that mattered."
Nerves certainly weren't a factor for Beyer, as he was seen throughout the competition talking with his competitors, smiling and getting the crowd going.
"Just talking with some of the other guys, there was a guy from Southern Utah that was at conference, and I know a couple other guys, so just talked with them and had a little fun," said Beyer. "But when it came down to business just had to focus and put one out there."
"It was fantastic to see that," Fearheiley said. "When he does that, and gets the crowd involved, that helps him. He does have the nerves where he could easily go over the edge, and he knows that if he does those things he can really stay on top of the mountain and not fall off. Doing that really helped out a lot and it obviously paid off."
"Yeah, I'm really hungry right now to get back out," Beyer added. "Like I said, I wish I had three more. I know something would've been there waiting for me."
