SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Zachary Short also got his first taste of the NCAA West Preliminaries, throwing 17.86 meters (58-7.25) in the shot put to finish second in his flight. He placed 24th over all, after entering the meet ranked 27th.
"It felt pretty good," said Short. "I've been working on a few different things, technically, and I felt like I executed them. Mostly on the last throw, there was just more speed into it, but everything else technically was pretty good on all three throws. The third one I just had way more intensity.
"I'm pretty happy. It's a great experience to come out and experience all the emotions that come with the First Rounds and all that."
"I thought he did really well," said assistant coach for throws,
Jason Fearheiley. "He was going in there a little bit more conservative than he thought he should've been but he realized that and put one together at the end. It was right around his average, which is hard to do on a stage like this."
Short improved with each attempt, peaking at 17.86 meters at the end.
Competition structure was a little different than normal, but Short was able to figure things out quickly and utilize the format to his advantage.
"It was interesting, trying to plan out my warmup time," Short recalled. "I could've fit in eight or nine throws, so it was a little strategic that way. And once you got in the competition it was pretty nice heat sizes and just a cool competition."
"I think it impacted him in a positive way," Fearheiley said. "He's smart. He came out here at the beginning, picked around, asked the right questions and learned what he had for time and what he had to do. He utilized the time well. It helped him a lot. He always competes really well. He has a nice way of staying focused and being in the moment and actually using it. I was never concerned about that at all."

Andrea Condie wraps up competition for Idaho, competing in the 5k at 8:45 p.m.
