THE FIELD: Idaho is seeded 15th out of the 18 schools at the Madison Regional. The Vandals will be joined by the following teams, in order of seeding: Duke, USC, Arizona State, Northwestern, Illinois, Purdue, Iowa State, Virginia, Wisconsin, Campbell, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Old Dominion, Oregon State, Murray State, North Dakota State and IUPUI. Six individuals on non-participating teams were also selected to compete at each regional.
THE FORMAT: The 54-hole tournament will be played over three days. Teams will play 18 holes each day Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The top six teams from each of the four regional sites will earn a berth in the 2018 NCAA National Championships, May 18-23, at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla. The top three individuals on a non-advancing team will also qualify for nationals.
VANDALS AT NCAAS: This marks Idaho's sixth team appearance at an NCAA Regional in program history, previously advancing in 2016, 2010, 2007, 2002 and 2001. The team's best finish was 12th at the 2007 tournament in Provo, Utah. The Vandals have never advanced to the NCAA Championship as a team, but two individuals have earned a spot at the final site. Kelly Nakashima moved on in 2007, thanks to a 15th-place finish at regionals. Leilani Kim advanced after taking eighth at the 2015 regional, the best finish by a Vandal at regionals.
BIG SKY CHAMPIONS: The Vandals won the 2018 Big Sky Championship by 10 strokes over preseason-favorite Sacramento State, boosted by an individual title from
Sophie Hausmann and a runner-up performance by
Michelle Kim. Idaho set the tournament record for lowest total team score (2-over; 866), thanks in part to a 5-under 283 in the final round, which tied the tournament record for lowest single-round team score. Hausmann matched her own conference record for lowest single-round score with a 7-under 65 en route to a tournament record 10-under 206 total score.
SOPHIE'S SUCCESS: Idaho junior
Sophie Hausmann was named the 2018 Big Sky Golfer of the Year prior to the conference tournament and backed it up with a tournament-record 10-under 206 to run away with her second individual title in three years. Hausmann, currently ranked No. 57 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, has posted top-10 finishes in five of her last seven starts, including two wins. Her season scoring average of 72.58 is on pace to rank No. 2 in school history.
