05/02/2019

TORONTO, Ontario – Idaho wide receiver David Ungerer was selected in the second round of the Canadian Football League Draft, going to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats with the 11th overall pick Thursday. Ungerer is the fourth Vandal to be taken in the modern CFL Draft, dating back to 1985, and the third in the last five years.

Ungerer stepped up as a senior, leading Idaho's receivers and posting a career year. He earned two All-Big Sky honors, being named third-team all-league at receiver and honorable mention as a return specialist. Ungerer led the Vandals with 69 catches for 697 yards and four touchdowns. He also scored one rushing touchdown and returned a punt for a score. His 6.3 receptions per game ranked second in the Big Sky.

The Pullman (Wash.) High School product played in 45 games for the Vandals, steadily improving before becoming a vital part of Idaho's offense in the final 17 games of his career. Ungerer recorded 1,009 of his 1,252 receiving yards and all 12 of his total touchdowns over the last season and a half.

Ungerer will earn his degree next week before he and the Tiger-Cats begin training camp ahead of the 2019 season opener June 1, at Ottawa. The 21-week regular season runs through the first week of November.

Running back Rolly Lumbala was the first Vandal to be drafted in the CFL, and remains the highest of Idaho's four draft picks, going ninth overall to the BC Lions in 2008. Defensive lineman Maxx Forde was picked by BC in the seventh round of the 2015 draft. Offensive lineman Mason Woods was the 10th overall selection by the Toronto Argonauts in 2017.

The CFL Draft is comprised of players from Canadian universities and Canadian players playing in the United States at NCAA or NAIA colleges.
