MOSCOW, Idaho –
Maggie Chen of women's tennis and
Travis Hansen of men's golf have been named this week's Vandals of the Week.
Â
Chen wrapped up her undergraduate degree in accounting this past May, finishing with a 3.9 grade-point average (GPA). With an extra year of eligibility, she began working on another degree, in interior architecture and design, this fall. Hansen earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the spring as he continues working on his degree in business economics.
Â
"It's a weird situation. I technically finished my accounting degree, I have a diploma," said Chen. "But I just feel like I'm not that into accounting so I added another major. I think my career goal is to become an interior designer. I would like to flip houses for other people and resell. I think that's really cool and it's a trend right now."
Â
"I like business economics because it's interesting to see fluctuations and different trends in markets and why certain things work," Hansen said. "I still have a lot to learn, have a lot of upper-level classes left, but it's just interesting to me. I started out with accounting back at LCSC, and it's good to have that under my belt, but I wanted to try something else."
Â
It was a great spring for both Chen and Hansen, who found ways to excel under challenging circumstances.
Â
"For me it was just taking what you have," said Hansen. "With golf getting canceled you could still practice on your own, but had to just buckle down on school at that point. You have to finish strong. Doing online work was different. It's really nice to have the feedback with your teachers, but when you're online it's a little different. You just have to work a little bit harder for it."
Â
Chen was particularly thankful for the recognition in the classroom.
Â
"I'm happy because I really work hard for it," Chen said. "I feel glad that I get recognized and that people know that I'm working hard. Also I feel like it's more for myself, but I'm really happy that people know I'm doing this. I just feel like I achieved something and it motivates me to work harder."
