Box Score EUGENE, Oregon—The University of Idaho Women's tennis team fell to the Oregon Ducks 5-2 on Friday afternoon in the Student Tennis Center.
The Vandals fell behind early in the match by losing the doubles point.
Laura Spataro and
Melissa Huchet each found success today for the Vandals, winning their singles matches and garnering two points for the team.
Spataro defeated Rifanty Kahfiani 7-6 (9-7), and 6-4 in the number one singles spot for her first singles win of the season and the 25
th win of her career.
Huchet defeated Lillian Mould, 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 1-0 (11-9), in the number two singles spot for her first career singles win as a Vandal.
Shion Watabe fought hard for the Vandals in the number six singles spot against Madisen Olsen but fell short 4-6, 6-7 (2-7). Watabe was behind 4-1 in the second set and fought back to force the tie breaker set.
"We played a very good team today," said Head Coach
Babar Akbar. "We were outplayed in doubles, but we competed in singles. Some of the matches could have gone our way but we pulled through in others, so this is progress in the right direction. We had a couple of good wins against some good players in our No. 1 and 2 singles. We competed on each court and this is the type of experience we are looking for going into our first conference match next week."

The Vandals will face Maryland tomorrow at 11 a.m. in a neutral site match in Euegene, Oregon. Idaho enters the match 0-4 on the season still seeking their first win. Maryland is the third Power 5 opponent the Vandals have faced so far this season. Idaho opened the season on the road at Washington State and are coming off a loss at Oregon today.
Laura Spataro leads the Vandals with 25 career singles wins and is fresh off a win against Oregon.
Melissa Huchet, who has been in the number two spot this season, picked her first win of the season and the first of her Vandal career against Oregon.
