Box Score EUGENE, Oregon—The University of Idaho Women's tennis team fell to the University of Maryland 4-0 in Eugene on Saturday afternoon.
The Vandals fell behind early in the match by losing the doubles point.
Laura Spataro and
Maggie Chen fell to Maryland's Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka and Ayana Akli 6-0 in the No. 1 doubles spot.
Andjela Todorovic and
Nicole Horacek, both freshmen, teamed up in the No. 3 doubles spot for the first time together and fell to Saya Usui and Eva Alexandrova 6-1.
In singles play Maryland won the first three matches taking the lead and win, 4-0. The remaining three matches were unfinished.
When the match was called
Maggie Chen was ahead in the No. 3 spot after defeating Adela Josefova 6-3 in the first set. Chen and Josefova were tied 4-4 in the second said when Maryland went up 4-0.
In the No. 4 spot Marta Magalahaes won the first set 6-3 and was tied 3-3 in the second with Chole Hamlin.
Andjela Todorovic lost the first set, 7-5, to Saya Usui in the No. 5 spot. Todorovic was ahead 2-1 in the second set when the match was called.
"We played a really tough team today. The girls battled for everything," said Head Coach
Babar Akbar. "Maryland was dominant in the doubles. I think there was a couple games that were close, but they just played better big points. At the 1 and 2 singles posistion they dominated but we were competing on the other courts. Another tough team on the road so we are looking forward to starting our Big Sky campaign at home next weekend. Hopefully we can take all this experience and start working towards our conference matches."
