The Vandals entered the 2016 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl as the underdogs despite their 8-4 record. Idaho had won four straight heading in, including a big 37-12 victory of Georgia State on Senior Day in the Kibbie Dome.
 
Colorado State got out to an early lead in sub-freezing temperatures, but Idaho was able to fight back with 41 unanswered points to take over. Matt Linehan was stellar, on his way to Most Valuable Player honors. He finished the night with 381 yards and four touchdowns through the air.
