Vandals Drop Heartbreaker to NAU

MOSCOW, Idaho – Northern Arizona picked off a Vandal pass in the end zone with 1:04 remaining to preserve a 38-31 win over Idaho Saturday at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow.
 
The Vandals had more first downs than the Lumberjacks and controlled possession for nearly 34 minutes of game time, but gave up three turnovers in the loss.
 
Idaho took an early 7-0 lead on a one-yard touchdown by Logan Kendall. The score was set up by a hard-fought 26-yard carry that saw Kendall carry several defenders down field.
 
Northern Arizona scored a pair of touchdowns before the Vandals tied the game with another one-yard touchdown.
 
Idaho regained the lead with a defensive touchdown. Fa'Avae Fa'Avae strip sacked NAU QB RJ Martinez. The ball bounced right to Charles Akanno who grabbed the ball in the endzone for the defensive touchdown.
 
The Lumberjacks closed the half with a 23-yard field goal to cut the Vandal lead to 21-17 at the half.
 
Northern Arizona scored a pair of third quarter touchdowns to take a 31-21 lead before the Vandals answered. Mike Beaudry found Terez Traynor for the five-yard TD with 11:29 to play in the game. Logan Prescott added a 29-yard field goal to tie the game at 31 with 6:46 to play.
 
The Lumberjacks answered with a four-play 75 scoring drive to retake the lead with 5:17 to play. The Vandals had one more shot after the NAU punter accidently put his knee down when gathering a low snap, giving the Vandals the ball in Lumberjack Territory.
 
After a first down on the first play of the drive, an interception in the end zone closed out any opportunity for the Vandals to tie the game.
 
The Vandals had 25 first downs to NAU's 23, but the Lumberjacks picked up 470 total yards to Idaho's 422. Beaudry tallied 306 yards passing on 28 completions. Traynor tallied a Vandal career-high 157 yards and a touchdown. Mekhi Stevenson tallied nine catches for 92 yards.
 
Roshaun Johnson led Idaho wit 57 yards rushing. Logan Kendall tallied 31 yards and two touchdowns.
 
Fa'Vae led the defense with 13 tackles and the forced fumble sack that led to the touchdown. Tre Walker added 11 tackles.
 
The Vandals close the home season next Saturday against Southern Utah before playing the final two games on the road against Montana State and Idaho State.
