The Idaho men's tennis team competed in four tournaments this fall season – Dar Walters Invite, ITA Regionals, Pacific Northwest Invitational, and the Gonzaga Invitational.
Dar Walters Invite at Boise State University – Four players competed at the Dar Walters Invite in singles and doubles.
Bruno Casino and
Francisco Gay paired up to defeat Baldwin/Watkins from Montana while falling to Baylon/Azuma (Air Force) and Vroman/Waldman (Air Force). Meanwhile, Mario Duron and
Matteo Masala paired up to defeat Vroman/Waldman (Air Force) but fell to Shaffrey/Pudney (Montana) and Zarkovic/Ninteman (Utah State).
ITA Regionals hosted by BYU – Six players traveled and competed in the ITA Regional Tournament in Provo, Utah. The Vandals put together a strong showing in the 128 player draw with teams from a total of 15 universities in the Mountain Region.
128 Singles Draw
Francisco Gay – Defeated Arjun Kersten (Air Force) 6-2, 6-2 to start the tournament. In the second round, he defeated #16 seed Facundo Tumosa (NAU) 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. In the round of 32, he beat Sergi Mico Fenollar from Utah State, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, before falling to #14 seed Louis Menard 7-5, 6-2 in the round of 16.
Bruno Casino – Defeated Daniel Dillon (NAU) 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round. Casino then defeated #17 seed Peter Sallay from the University of Denver 6-4, 6-3. In the round of 32, Casino fell to the #8 seed Francisco Bastias from the University of Utah.
Mario Duron – The VCU transfer fell to the #32 seed Matheus Leite 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round, before bouncing back and defeating Luke Wolf Air Force 6-1, 6-2. Duron withdrew before playing the next round after being sidelined due to injury.
Francisco Bascon – Bascon defeated Nicolas Prieto (New Mexico) 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round. In the second round, Bascon downed Dominik Jakovljevic from BYU 6-4, 7-6 (4). In the round of 32, Bascon defeated #16 seed Maciej Ziomber from NAU, 7-5, 6-2. In the following round, he defeated a tough opponent from Utah State, #23 seed David Cierny, 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-4. However, Bascon was stopped in the quarterfinals by Bodin Zarkovic from Utah State 6-4, 6-1.
Matteo Masala – Fell to #29 seed Matej Panik from Montana State 7-6 (3), 6-1 in the opening round. However, Masala would go on to win the consolation draw. Along the way, he defeated Gabriel Chavez (Utah State, 6-3, 6-3), teammate
Vivek Ramesh (UI 7-5, 6-0), Chia Chieh Lin (Weber State, 6-4, 4-6, 10-5), Hiroki Fujita (Idaho State, 7-6 (2), 7-5), Jan Pucalka (3-6, 7-6(5), 10-8), and Arjun Kersten (6-2, 7-5).
Vivek Ramesh – Fell to Corey Clarke from New Mexico 6-4, 6-3, and then lost to fellow teammate
Matteo Masala 7-5, 6-0.
64 Doubles Draw
Duron/Gay – Defeated #15 seed Gavelin/Krenn (Utah) 8-2 to open the tournament then went on to defeat Marouani/Sarap from Weber State 8-4, before falling to the #3 seed Barnett/Leite from BYU 8-6.
Bascon/Casino – Defeated Ziomber/Dillon (NAU) 8-6, before falling to Cuesta/Ros (Denver) 8-4.
Ramesh/Masala – Fell to Montana State tandem Panik/Van Djik 8-2 in the opening round.
Pacific Northwest Invitational – The Vandals put together a stellar tournament in Seattle to win four out of the five flights. The Vandals won the A & B singles flights, and the A & B doubles flights.
A Singles Flight – The A flight featured three Vandals getting to the semifinals, before having an All-Vandal final. Freshmen
Francisco Gay won four straight matches before being crowned the tournament champion. In the finals, he defeated fellow teammate
Bruno Casino 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
B Singles Flight – Mario Duron won four matches to claim the B draw. Along the way, he defeated players from Seattle U, fellow teammate
Vivek Ramesh, George Fox University, and Portland State. In the finals, he beat Oliver Richards (PSU) 6-4, 6-0.
A Doubles – The A doubles flight featured an All-Idaho final between Bascon/Duron vs. teammates Casino/Masala. Bascon/Duron would ultimately win over their teammates to claim the tournament. Along the way, they defeated teams from Portland State and George Fox University.
B Doubles – Teammates
Vivek Ramesh and
Alex Asenov paired up to win the B doubles flight. They defeated teams from George Fox and Seattle U. In the finals, the duo defeated Hall/Givens-Jensen 6-2.
Gonzaga Invitational – The Vandal men's tennis team wrapped up the fall season at the Gonzaga Invitational that featured eight teams from around the region. Idaho put on a strong performance throughout the three-day event, as Mario Duron and
Adam Taylor teamed up to win their doubles flight and three other Vandals moved on to the semifinals in singles play.
Blue Singles -
Francisco Bascon earned a victory over #14 seed Joaquin Espinoza (Montana State, 6-0, 6-2) to open the tournament before falling to Matthew Hollingworth (Gonzaga, 6-2, 7-6(2)).
Bruno Casino fell to #8 seed Arthus de La Bassetiere (Gonzaga) in the first round, 7-6(7), 7-5.
White Singles – Mario Duron earned an opening-round victory over Caden Moortgat from Boise State, 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-2. Duron would go on to fall in the quarterfinals to #1 seed Leon Roider (Gonzaga, 6-3 6-2).
Sophomore
Matteo Masala opened match play with a pair of victories over Manuel Monteiro (Montana State, 6-2, 6-4) and Oscar Brown (Portland, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3) to earn a berth to the semifinals. Roider outlasted Masala, 6-0, 7-6 (4). Roider would go on the win the east stage.
Red Singles -- #8 seed Alejandro Salvador earned a pair of victories over Brady Thomas of Eastern Washington (6-3, 6-2) and Jacob Huppin of Montana State (6-1, 6-3). Teammate
Vivek Ramesh would join Salvador in the semifinals after picking up a pair of wins over Bruno Ortega (EWU, 6-1, 6-3) and Will Jesser (Portland State, 6-4, 7-5).
Salvador fell in straight sets to #1 seed Jesse Haas of Boise State (6-3, 6-1) while Ramesh surrendered to Pontus Hallgren (Montana, 6-3, 6-3).
Blue Doubles – Sophomore
Francisco Bascon and Junior
Bruno Casino paired up to earn a win over Montana State duo Monteiro/Sitar, 8-4. The two eventually fell, 8-6, to Boise State in the next round.
White Doubles – Teammates Alejandro Salvador and
Matteo Masala surrendered a first-round loss to Mueller/Sarlvik of EWU, 8-7 (5).
Red Doubles – Mario Duron and
Adam Taylor teamed up to win the red doubles flight. They took down Eastern Washington and Portland State before defeating fellow teammates
Alex Asenov and
Vivek Ramesh in the finals, 8-5.
