Box Score SPOKANE, Wash.— The University of Idaho men's tennis team fell to Gonzaga, 5-2, to begin the 2021 season.

Gonzaga won two out of three doubles matches to take the doubles point.

Francisco Bascon and Matteo Masala picked up the lone doubles win for the Vandals, defeating Gonzaga, 6-3, in the No. 1 spot.

In singles play the Vandals picked up two wins.


Bascon won 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 1 spot for his first singles win of the season.

Bruno Casino picked up a singles win, earning the second point for the Vandals in the No. 3 spot, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (13-11).

"Our first match since March of last year. We have had every challenge thrown at us these past 11 months. You could definitely see the rust spots, but it felt so good and awesome to be competing again," said Head Coach Daniel Hangstefer. "I have to give so much credit to the guys for how they have maturely handled every situation since being back last fall. While we did not get the result we were hoping for, we have so many bright spots. It was great to see both our team captains win their singles matches today, along with newcomer Matteo Masala at No. 1 doubles."
