MOSCOW, Idaho – Head men's golf coach
David Nuhn has announced his 2021 Team Awards, highlighted by freshman sensation
Jose Suryadinata as the Most Valuable Player and Freshman of the Year.
Suryadinata led the way for the Vandals in 2021 and competed in all seven events, earning All-Big Sky First Team and Freshman of the Year honors. His low round of the year was a 67, coming at the Nick Watney Invitational. He finished that tournament at 11-under to take third overall, his best finish of the season. Suryadinata went on to tie for sixth at the Big Sky Championships last weekend.
"There's not enough positive adjectives out there to describe Jose. Dedicated, committed, fearless. The guy won't let anything stand in his way. As a freshman, a great example to all of what we're cultivating here in Moscow," Head Coach
David Nuhn said. "A winning mindset and commitment to the process. Jose embodies those core values every day."
Sean Mullan earned the team's Senior Award. He finished the year with a tournament scoring average of 73.52. His best finish of the year came at the Joust at Goose Creek, when he tied for fourth overall. Mullan shot a 69 three times on the year.
"I'm so proud of this team and their commitment to excellence throughout this trying year," said Nuhn. "Sean took a big leap of faith deciding to come back to the US for an additional year of school and golf. We've been incredibly lucky to have his calm wisdom and leadership this year."
Jack Plaster took home the Most Improved Vandal Award. Plaster made huge strides this season, improving his scoring average by 1.13 strokes per round. He saved his best for last, posting his best round (68) in the final round of the Big Sky Championship to earn fourth overall.
"Jack is so deserving of most improved," said Nuhn. "He's earned it through the hours of work. He plays his game the best he can and I would never bet against him with a wedge in his hands! Look for him to be there with one round to go at the Big Sky Championships next year again.
"Future is exciting and bright for Vandal golf!"
