USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The Vandal men's tennis team took to the courts this weekend at Air Force for the 2022 ITA Bedford Cup In The Mountains. 

Four out of six Vandals that competed in singles play advanced to the quarterfinals to lead Idaho. 

Matteo Masala and Francisco Gay each earned a victory in the opening round of singles action over familiar faces from Montana State in the Lightning Draw. Gay faced off against Matej Panik of MSU for the third time in five months, where Panik held a 2-0 record over the Idaho sophomore after defeating him in the spring regular season (4/10) and Big Sky Conference championship (4/30). This time, Gay was victorious in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 to move on to the quarters. Masala took down Montana State's Jamieson Nathan in straight sets, punching his ticket to the next round in the winners' bracket. The pair each tallied a 2-1 singles record over three days in Colorado. 

Mario Duron and Taiyo Kurata each recorded wins in their first-round singles matchups in the Raptor Draw. Duron recorded a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jan Lucca Marquadt of Boise State while Kurata defeated Kyle Garner (Air Force), 6-3, 6-3 to move on to the quarterfinals. 

A consolation finals appearance by Alex Asenov and Masala highlighted doubles play for the Vandals. The pair went 3-2 with wins over Denver, New Mexico State and BYU. 

Idaho's next tournament is scheduled for Sept. 30-Oct. 2. The Vandals will head down to Boise to play in the Dar Walters Invitational Tournament.
