Vandal Offense Wins Spring Game 20-17

MOSCOW, Idaho – Gevani McCoy found Jordan Dwyer in the corner of the endzone as time expired to lead the Idaho Offense to a 20-17 win over the Vandal defense Friday night in the spring game.

The defense was spotted 17 points for the game and would have been rewarded with points for turnovers but failed to capitalize. Trent Elstad scored a one-yard touchdown and Ricardo Chavez added field goals of 44 and 37 yards, all in the first half.

The offense racked up 453 yards on 83 plays, including 385 through the air. Gevani McCoy was 21/30 for 251 yards and a touchdown. Redshirt freshman Jack Layne was 10/19 for 134 yards. Neither Quarterback threw an interception.

Anthony Woods had 15 carries for 38 yards, but as he was called down on first contact, he wasn't able to show his tackle breaking ability.

Hayden Hatten was once again the feature of the offense, he caught nine passes for 98 yards. Thirteen receivers caught passes in game.

The Defense was solid. Zack Krotzer and Sully Shannon recorded sacks and the Vandals had seven tackles for loss. Xavier Slayton had a strong performance at defensive end, knocking down two passes and earning an assisted tackle for loss.

The offense drove on the first possession of the game, earning a field goal attempt that was hit by Chavez, but the defense held the offense out of the endzone for the rest of the first quarter.

Early in the second, Layne Found Trais Higgins with a great catch at the one-yard line to set up the Elstad score. The first team capped the next drive with a 37-yard Chavez field goal.

The defense held the offense scoreless until the final drive of the game. The offense was backed up after at 1/20 on their own 26 with under a minute to play, but McCoy found Dwyer for 21 yards to get the first down and found him gain on the ensuing play for 30 yards to get deep into the defensive territory.

McCoy passed the ball to Tommy Hauser to the two-yard line to set up the final score for Dwyer.

The spring game capped a solid spring that saw Idaho improve across the board.

"I think we are right where we need to be," head coach Jason Eck said. "We didn't have any injuries to starters. I like where we are at. We will give them a break at after finals, but we will be right back at it starting with our first summer workout session at the end of May."

The Vandals are scheduled to begin fall camp around the first of August before kicking off the season on Thursday, August 31st against Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.
