FARMINGTON, Utah –Kira Witte was named the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week following a shutout weekend at Utah Tech and UNLV. This is Witte's first Player of the Week honor this season and fourth of her career.
After a 13-shutout season last year, Witte has returned for more. This past weekend, Witte earned her first two clean sheets of the season as the Vandals went on their first road trip to Utah Tech and UNLV. With the two shutouts, Witte climbed up to the No. 1 spot in Idaho history with 15 career shutouts. She is tied with Liz Boyle but has accomplished the feat in just 21 games.
Kira is one of 23 active keepers in the NCAA with two shutouts this season and leads the Big Sky with a save percentage of 0.833. Witte recorded 12 saves on the road, with one at Utah Tech and a season-high of 11 at UNLV. After the Vandals earned the lead in the 66th minute, Witte saw the Rebel's best offensive effort facing nine shots and saving three on goal. Witte stifled all of UNLV's efforts and sealed the win for Idaho.
The Vandals return home this week on Thursday, August 31st at 6:00 p.m. as they take on Nevada in the P1FCU Kibbie Dome.
