PHARR, Texas - Freshman
Ginger Kiefer posted her third school record of the season while taking home a bronze medal to close out day three at the WAC Championships on Friday at the Pharr Natatorium.
Kiefer continued her dominance in one the most successful freshman seasons in Vandal history, earning a program record time of 4:17.78 in the 400 IM to help take home her first conference championship medal with a bronze finish. Kiefer surpassed the previous 400 IM mark by more than three seconds, passing Rachel Millet with a time of 4:21.25 (Nov. 22, 2014).
19 different Vandals moved on to the A, B and C finals in their respective events, including three swimmers advancing on to the main event in the nightcap.
Senior
Zoe Froh and Kiefer started day three in the 400 IM each recording a top eight finish in the prelims. Kiefer swam her way to a third-place finish with a time of 4:21.43 and a mark that sits second all-time in the Idaho record book. Froh followed in sixth clocking in at 4:26.14.
Sophomore
Grace Ruble secured a spot in the 100-yard butterfly finals taking eighth in the prelims with a career best time of 55.53. Her mark now sits ninth all-time in program history.
The 400 medley relay team of Kiefer,
Natalie Charles, Ruble and
Ella Haskins finished out competition with a fifth-place finish at 3:44.16.
Northern Arizona remains in first place with 572.5 points while Idaho places sixth with 261.5 total points.
The WAC Championships will conclude tomorrow with events in the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 1650 free and platform dive starting at 8:30 a.m. PST followed by the finals at 4 p.m. PST. Haskins holds the top time in the conference in the 100 free and looks to capture her second medal of the week.
