FARMINGTON, Utah— Legendary University of Idaho athletes and former All-Americans Doug Nussmeier and Dan O'Brien were inducted into the Big Sky Hall of Fame, the conference announced on Thursday morning.
Nussmeier, a Vandal quarterback from 1990-93, rewrote the Idaho record book during his time in Moscow. In the 39 games he lined up under center, Nussmeier quarterbacked one of the most electric offenses in Division 1-AA history. En route to winning Idaho's second Walter Payton Award in his senior season, Nussmeier recorded a historic 172.2 QB rating, completed 61% of his passes, threw for 2,960 yards, and a school-record record 33 touchdowns. As a dual threat, Nussmeier is one of only five quarterbacks in NCAA history to throw for at least 10,000 (10,824) yards and rush for 1,000 (1,230).
Following his collegiate career, Nussmeier was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the fourth round of the NFL draft. His coaching career has been highlighted by stops at Michigan State, the St. Louis Rams, Washington, Alabama, Michigan, Florida, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Los Angeles Chargers. He won a Super Bowl last season as the quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. He was named the offensive coordinator for the Saints shortly after the Super Bowl and will return to the organization who drafted him for the 2025 season.
O'Brien enters the hall of fame following a legendary career in which he earned the title of "World's Greatest Athlete". As a student-athlete for the Vandals, O'Brien competed in the decathlon for Vandal Head Coach Mike Keller.
During his time in Moscow, O'Brien earned All-America honors in the 55-meter hurdles and finished in seventh place at the NCAA Indoor Championships. In 1989, he scored a school and conference-record 7,988 points in the decathlon to earn Big Sky Track and Field Athlete of the Year but was injured and couldn't compete at the national championship.
Following his time at the University of Idaho, O'Brien went on to be the best decathlete in the world for a decade, earning the world No. 1 ranking on six occasions, winning three world decathlon championships, and won a 1996 Olympic gold medal. During a time in the 90s, he was one of the most recognizable athletes in the US and the face of the "Dan and Dave" campaign for Reebok and graced the cover magazines and the legendary Wheaties box. He has been inducted into the USA Track & Field Hall of Fame. The track and field complex on campus at the University of Idaho is named in his honor.
There are 10 inductees to the 2025 Hall of Fame class from five different institutions. The official induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, July 19 at 6:30 p.m. PT as part of the Big Sky Football Kickoff Weekend at Northern Quest Resort & Casino in Airway Heights, Washington.
